LINDA DOUNIA REBEIZ

Linda Dounia Rebeiz is an artist and designer who investigates the philosophical and environmental implications of technocapitalism. She is inspired by science fiction, speculative design, solarpunk, and degrowth.

Her work mediates her memories as alternative truths and evidence of excluded ways of being and doing. It is formed through the dialogue (and tensions) between analogue and digital mediums.

In 2023, Linda was recognized on the TIMEAI100 list of most influential people in AI for her work on speculative archiving – building AI models that help us remember what we have lost.

ONCE UPON A GARDEN – GENESIS

'Once Upon A Garden', a project started in 2022 that depicts a world where humans have to live with simulations of flora because it is extinct.

(2022—2024)

ONCE UPON A GARDEN – FLORE PERDUE

Flore Perdue comes two years after ‘Once Upon a Garden’. In this sequel, I am interested in how much generative AI has grown in its ability to help us remember in more vivid details.

ONCE UPON A GARDEN – LOST SPECIMENS

Lost Specimens is an ongoing digital herbarium for  ‘Once Upon A Garden’. It features the dominant species that emerged from training the GAN model for the project.

FERAL BLUEPRINT

Feral Blueprint models changes to the urban landscape of my hometown, Mbour. This project explores the cost of rapid urbanization and the fragile landscapes it creates.

SPANNUNGSBOGEN

Spannungsbogen is a series of AI generated animations which are outputs of a GAN trained with 2,000 abstract acrylic vignettes hand painted by the artist. It’s the first large scale GAN release by a black/African/woman.
Machine Hallucinations
(2021)

BEHIND GLASS

Behind Glass employs monochromatic shapes which glide in and out of focus. Each shifting unknown form is born behind an invisible place, their very existence marked by a structure we cannot see.

(2023)

TONGUES

Tongues is a long-form generative AI project which explores asemic text, using symbols that look like writing but have no meaning. Tongues investigates if asemic text can be modelled using a GAN trained on hand-drawn ink calligraph.
Asemic Lettering
(2022)

AI IN BLOOM

AI In Bloom is abstract exploration of flora in 3 stages. First, outputs are generated from a GAN trained on hand-painted abstract acrylic flowers . Then, these outputs are assembled in a grid by hue and composition. Finally, the resulting grid is created using a collage script.
Machine Hallucinations
(2021—2022)

BLUR THEORY

Blur Theory is a drive through Dakar’s city scapes through the lossy lens of AI.
Machine Hallucinations
(2023—2024)

CHEZ JO

Chez Jo is generative AI series that explores the theme of underrepresented minority groups within large data sets often used in today’s AI systems.

LE BOUQUET

Le Bouquet, dedicated to my grandmother's whimsy, is a digital attempt at her daily flower offering. It uses a grid as a grounding visual instrument. The flowers are drawn on the grid, sometimes converging into fanciful bouquets and sometimes standing at odds.

VERAAAAAA!

VERAAAAAA! is study of Vera Molnar’s pioneering work in algorithmic art and an exploration of code-generated typography.

DES CHOSES™

DES CHOSES™ is a flash fiction experiment which explores love and loss in a relationship between human and machine. In a series of postcards divided in 11 chapters, we learn about two entities, intertwined then estranged.

TV WAS MY BEST FRIEND

TV Was My Best Friend is a body of work that reimagines the SMPTE bands that filled so much of my days as a child and were, incidentally, my first introduction to digital art and design.
Animation + Generative Sketch
(2021—2024)

MAAM

This body of work codifies weaving patterns of rabaal fabric, typically used in Senegal for weddings and baptisms. Beneath the soothingly repetitive patterns of rabaal, there is elegant mathematics at play.

(2022—2023)

KEUR BAYE

Keur Baye is an attemt to piece together fragments of my childhood home. It was sold and torn down many years ago and has been replaced by a wholesale store. Making this work was a helpful part of my grieving process when I returned in search of my childhood home.

RE-USE

Inspired by the traditions of the Baye Fall, REUSE takes my 'digital waste' to create 48 unique garment pieces. In repurposing my creative offcuts to create new material with the use of generative system, the REUSE collection explores an altered attitude to digital production.

COLOUR ME WILD

Colour Me Wild is one of my first attempt at collaborating with generative AI. It’s a series of collages made with fragments made in collaboration with DALL.E trained on my acrylic paintings, then collaged in a procedural way using code.
Techno Expressionism

TO ERASE A HOME

To Erase A Home is a tangential exploration of how studying the maps of my hometown over the last few decades made me feel, the memories  they brought, and the nostalgia for one of the happiest times of my life.

MORNING PAGES

Since my transition from a full time designer to a full time artists, I have missed making graphic design work. Morning Pages are how I keep my design muscles alive while processing what’s top of mind daily.
